ThinKiosk 5.1 launches
Version 5.1 provides enhanced end-point protection allowing IT departments to apply the same level of corporate security to their converted thin client devices. We launched the first ThinKiosk Enterprise solution four years ago, and it was the first Windows based PC to thin client conversion solution available.
But that was then, and time doesn’t stand still, which is also true when it comes to our ThinKiosk development team. During that time ThinKiosk has matured, evolved, and been deployed in hundreds of customer environments, and in twenty-five countries across the globe. However, calling them just customers would be an injustice as they have all played an active part in providing feedback that has helped shape the solution to where it is today, which brings me nicely onto what we are announcing.
Let me introduce you to ThinKiosk 5.1, which is now generally available, and takes the humble thin client conversion solution to the next level in security and overall end user experience. Just going back to that customer feedback for a moment, we are also proud to announce a new ThinKiosk edition with ThinKiosk Enterprise Plus, which joins ThinKiosk Community and Enterprise Editions.
With ThinKiosk Enterprise Plus an enterprise can deliver a truly secure environment, all centrally managed, while at the same time enabling end users to be more productive.
What’s new in 5.1:
Secure Remote Worker
One of the cool features in the ThinKiosk 5.1 release is Secure Remote Worker, a feature that is a must have for any enterprise that is looking to embrace BYOD and remote or home working.
Secure Remote Worker allows an end user to switch between their personal environment and their corporate workspace environment securely, all without the need to reboot, dual-boot, or boot from an external USB device.
ThinKiosk delivers a familiar end user experience with the same look and feel regardless of the end user working on their office PC, PC at home, or laptop, although behind the scenes different policies could be deployed depending on their location. Perfect for ensuring devices are both secured and compliant.
Secure, Secure, Secure …
Alongside enabling remote working, whether it be from home or while travelling, security is always a key consideration, and could often be the reason for not embracing this style of working, but with the ThinKiosk 5.1 release, we have introduced new security features, all designed to ensure that end users can only connect from an environment that is secure and meets all corporate compliance policies.
Windows Patch Management
The first of these is Windows Patch Management. Windows Patch Management gives you far greater control over how Windows Updates are checked for, installed, and reported on.
ThinKiosk can check for available updates at regular intervals and then decide what to do when patches are available to install. You can choose to just silently install the patches, or notify the user of the available patches and let them choose to install or defer the installation for a later time. The other option, if you want to be super secure, is to inform the end user there are available patches, but not let them use ThinKiosk until those patches have been installed.
Windows Security Centre Detection
So now you can easily manage patches and ensure the environment is up to date, but what about the other security aspects of an environment, components such as Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Firewalls. How do you know these are compliant? That’s where the next new feature, Windows Security Centre Detection comes into play.
ThinKiosk can now detect the health of various components, including Anti-Virus, Anti-Spyware, Firewalls and Windows Update, monitored by the Windows Security Centre, giving you confidence that all the end points being used to access your virtual environment are secure and compliant.
If any of the enabled components are not reporting a good health the user can be notified and you can decide if they can continue using ThinKiosk or if they need to resolve the problem first.
Windows Firewall Control
Last, but by no means least, we have the Windows Firewall Control feature. As the name suggests, this feature allows ThinKiosk to be configured to control the rule set that is in place for the Windows Firewall. You can remove all existing rules and add custom rules of your own to ensure only the applications you want to have inbound and outbound network connectivity have it.
What’s an even more powerful and compelling solution is when coupled with Secure Remote Worker the configured firewall rules are only in place when the device is placed in ‘worker’ mode. If the device is being used as a personal PC, then the original firewall ruleset is activated.
So, what’s next?
